The Medical Department serves as a cornerstone of the facility's operations, responsible for maintaining the physical and mental well-being of all personnel. It operates an Infirmary of >4 beds, with an examination room and a laboratory, and ensures it is properly staffed, equipped, and operational at all times.
Department Operations
The department functions as both a frontline emergency service and a provider of routine and preventive care, including general practice, occupational health, and internal medicine. Its scope ranges from treating workplace injuries to issuing medical clearances for hazardous duties, administering vaccinations, and offering mental health counseling. All of this is done through both an appointment-scheduling system, and on-site emergency medical landlines.
Medical Roleplay
Medical Roleplay is based on real-life medical practices, which means medical personnel need to have a foundational understanding of actual medicine (think 'Ro-Med'). This knowledge is essential to ensure realistic roleplay. To support this, training is provided during your time in residency or nursing programs, where you will learn the necessary medical skills, terminology, and protocols.
Furthermore, the roleplay is grounded in the practices and limitations of 70s-era medicine. Personnel rely on older diagnostic tools like mercury thermometers, physical exams, and X-rays. Sames goes for treatments, surgeries, and medications which creates a challenging setting.
Role within Facility Operations
Physicians and Nurses have a legal say in BEXCO's administration. They are authorized to certify hazard clearances, as well as medical findings in legal or disciplinary matters. Autopsies, wound assessments, psychiatric evaluations, and death certifications fall under their jurisdiction. Medical documents are not just a roleplay prop, they genuinely contribute to administrative matters and other departments.
Beyond daily medical care, the department organizes and executes health programs. These include vaccination campaigns, wellness checks, as well as training seminars in areas like first aid and emergency response.
The Medical Department is divided into Residency and Nursing.
Residency focuses on physicians undergoing advanced clinical training to become licensed doctors, taking on diagnostic, treatment, and leadership responsibilities. It is considered a difficult path, since it requires dedication to learn medical knowledge and practical skills. It is recommended if you are passionate about medicine.
Nursing specializes in patient care, assisting with treatments, managing administrative work such as taking appointments, and supporting physicians. It is a less difficult path, since it requires less knowledge and involves more hands-on roleplay and teamwork, which can be considered more rewarding.
This department is ideal for players who enjoy hands-on, realistic roleplay based on medical knowledge and teamwork, with the right amount of paperwork.
